I’m behind with my news due to visitors, work, flying and running. Life is never dull.
I’ll start with the highlight … the Eagles and James Taylor concert. We’d booked the tickets back in January and I have always wanted to see the Eagles so this was another magic moment on this 50 Shades experience. James Taylor was the support act so it could not have been better. I”ve seen James before many years ago and he lived up to expectations. He played for 90 minutes and then it was on. The Eagles lost Glenn Frey in 2015 which was a massive loss to the band. The Eagles each sing songs but Glenn was the main lead singer. They had his son Declan join the band and sing some of Glenn’s songs but also a popular country and western singer called Vince Gill signed on to do Glenn’s other songs. Both guys were brilliant. It was hard to tell the difference and the songs sounded perfect. The whole band was just awesome. Don Henley was perfect and the other band members sounded as good as they ever did. The hits just kept rolling and they played for 2 and a half hours. It was an absolute sing-fest. They waited for the encore to play Hotel California and everyone had their phone lights on calling them back. We’ve seen some great artists perform here but I have to say, The Eagles would be the most enjoyable. It really was something I never thought I’d see. It was sad as they paid tribute to Glenn Frey and for a band that has been around for 40+ years, you could feel the sadness in their voices. But, The Eagles did him proud and they are the reason I want to learn the guitar – a job for when I go home as it never eventuated over here.
They left Hotel California until the end as an encore. This was crowd waving their phones - it was pretty magical. And of course, Hotel California and those Don Henley vocals ended a fantastic night of music.
We had Deb’s brother and wife visit. They were delayed arriving as a bad storm diverted them to Boston where they were offloaded and left to fend for themselves to get to DC. Poor form by Lufthansa !! It was a long night for everyone but we booked them on flights the next day and they arrived in DC very tired but relieved to be here. A few hours later, we were off to see the Eagles and Deb’s brother was in heaven like me.
We did some daytrips while they were here. One was up to Harpers Ferry which is in the bottom corner of West Virginia. It’s a nice place to look around this old Civil War town and we also took a small hike up to a beautiful lookout. The humidity was horrible but the view was worth it. Harpers Ferry is also on the famous Appalachian Trail so we spent some time at the visitor centre looking at the trail info. The Appalachian Trail is about 4000 miles long from Vermont all the way down to Georgia. We also did the Gettysburg trip. This was my fourth trip to Gettysburg and I always enjoy it. I bought an CD so we can do our own audio tour which is quite good and informative.
Some shots from Gettysburg.
And some nice shots of the dogs enjoying the warm DC summer.
